Munich Botanical Gardens

Last Tuesday was Bradley's last day in town, so we headed into Munich to check out Schloss Nymphenburg - which I discuss in this post. Near the palace is something we didn't get to check out on our previous trip, the Munich Botanical Gardens. This sounded like a good idea to all of us, so we headed over.

The first place we headed in the gardens was the roses section. Unfortunately, we had come too late in the year to see the roses at their best. We did, however, get to see this little guy puttering around the center of the area, keeping the grass nice and manicured.

Lisa found one of her happy places: a see of purple flowers.

But ... but ... PURPLE!

The gardens have a huge area that is pretty much all dahlia hybrids. Despite the fact that they are all listed this way, the variety of flower shapes was truly impressive.

Really, it is hard to make humorous captions about flowers
The perfection of the petal shapes on these guys amazed all of us.

Is that a geodesic?

The next closest area to explore was the greenhouse area. Alas! The greenhouses were closed for maintenance. So, we wandered over to the "Alpine Plants", wondering what that would be. Turns out, it is a rock outcropping with a large variety of mosses and lichens, all meticulously labeled. (If you zoom in far enough on this picture, you can see all the labels on their little stands).

Kate Moss? Randy Moss? Elisabeth Moss? Carrie-Anne Moss?
The sprinklers were running, giving a lovely "trees in the mist" feel.

If this were Colorado, that wouldn't be "mist"

I think this picture nicely captures the serenity of the trip.

But where are the hobitses?

There are many other sections of the gardens including "Heath", "Moor", and "Ferns". I'm quite sure that we will be making a return trip in the spring when the flowers are in full bloom, the greenhouses are open and the temperature is a little warmer.
